so yesterday i was on campus, and in the lounge the facilities gentleman, the one with the kind face, was showing the other facilities gentlemen his online photo gallery: sunsets and birds and beaches and bowls of fruit. he was so proud of his photoshoppe prowess. i think my favorite thing in the world is when people are proud of things they do.
then i started thinking about all the homeless people who write poems, and draw, and create weird crafty things they learned to make in prison out of nothing but magazine pages, paperclips, and saliva.
then i started thinking, we need a community art forum. or something of the like. NOT pretentious, intimidating open mic stuff at coffee houses (despite my love for such hipster fun) but something that is really and truly for everyone who isn't an artist. an open space, a cheap soundsystem, and a couple pots of coffee; no judgments, no talent required, just a place where people are empowered to share cool shit they do. community building, yo.

anyone interested in helping me coordinate something like this for the end of the summer?

the war in iraq has cost orange county (via taxes) 1.35 BILLION dollars.

this works out to about $1,000 per citizen.

instead we could have built over TWELVE THOUSAND units of affordable rental housing.

when i read this in the weekly (which was just confirmed with some online scouting), i cried. sitting in einstein eating a bagel on my lunch break, i cried. we could have entirely eradicated homelessness in the entire fucking county...which would have provided housing to many of the people who make our city's tourist economy possible by cleaning the convention center and serving fries at disney and otherwise doing the shit jobs that make our standard of living so damn grand. instead (and regardless of how you feel about the war) kids my age are getting shot so they can pay to go to college.

check out the cost of war calculator for yourself.
www.costofwar.com

get pissed, friends. i am.

One book you have read more than once
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (I could blame Mr. Rohol and the intensity of senior year, but it's still one of my favorite books. thanks, BRENT)

3. One book you would want on a desert island
Working by Studs Terkel. it's 590 pages of interviews with people about their jobs and lives. i would never get lonely! plus, if i ever got off the island, i would have amazing ethnography skills.

4. One book that made you laugh
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

5. One book that made you cry
Possible Side Effect by Augusten Burrough (also made me laugh maniacally, but i'm thinking in particular of the part where he takes the dog to the ASPCA because he's an alcoholic and can't take care of him and the woman who works there is like, this is your lowest point, you're going to relate this at an AA meeting one day, and he's like how do you know, and she tells him, two years, one day at a time, and if you know much about my family you will understand why)
A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut. we should all be that compassionate.

6. One book you wish had been written
what a bizarre question. i wish dorothy allison had written a million more books. she's still alive. maybe she will.

7. One book you wish had never been written
Anything by Ann Coulter (die, bitch. and get out of the public library)

8. One book you are currently reading
Jailbird by Kurt Vonnegut; Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson (although not by choice)

9. One book you have been meaning to read
A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. i have it as a reference book but i'd really like to have to time to read the whole damn thing.

10. Now tag five people!
kristen the librarian, marielle, evan altes, despina the great, and ryan wyatt.
